Chester le Street Under 10 Whites went into their third game of the season with their full complement of players following the return to action of Dan Burlison from injury. On the supporters side John Soulsby was a noticeable absence only informing the coaches of his absence @9.37 AM that morning.
After the excellent performances of the past two weeks the lads looked up for the fight right from the first whistle. They took an early lead through Joshua Ruggles who scored after some neat interplay with Logan Newton, firing the ball low past the keeper who had no chance. 1 – nil three minutes played!
‘Rugs’ then turned provided, slipped neat little pass through to Logan who buried it first time, again the opposition keeper had no chance! That’s Logan’s 3rd in three games…and long may it continue!
2 – nil then became 3 – nil. A long ball clearance (truthfully maybe our only one all game) was latched onto by Joshua who ran from the half way line and made no mistake for his 2nd of game from 10 yards firing hard into the corner.
3 – 0, 15 mins played and totally deserved, the football was lovely to watch at times. Calm and composed with the ball, hard work and effort when we lost it.
Joshua could, and should, have had his hat trick – Ben Cummings sliding him through only to hit the keeper when it looked easier to score! Ben then nearly grabbed a fourth goal, his header from the corner just going over the bar.
Chances also fell to Charlie Soulsby who was playing in a more advanced position today, and Dan ‘the Chester Kante’ Watkin. Good blocks preventing what looked like good strikes. Charlie was up and down all game as was Dan Watkin both players covering every blade of grass twice at least!
Defensively we look assured, Dan Burlison, Alex White and Max Carr were solid as ever, Max’s “free-kick” bringing some half time amusement, mostly to Max himself 🙂 . The one time the defense was breached a sensational last ditch tackle from Josh Wright (playing LAM) saved the day!
In all seriousness, a big reason we’re playing so well is how well we look to use the ball from the back. Quality passing, being brave and looking to keep possession are things we weren’t always doing week in week out last season. We are now – has the penny finally dropped??
2nd half we weren’t quite at the level of the first, however a fourth goals duly arrived through the trusty left peg of Logan Newton, who made no mistakes putting it bottom left corner. Not even Joe Hart woulda saved that trust me…
The high 5 arrived through Ben Cummings – Joshua Ruggles played a lovely through ball which Ben latched onto smashing it past the keeper from 15 yards. His first of the new season.
Josh Wright had a couple of close efforts but it wasnt to be for Wrighty today who really had an excellent all round game but just didn’t make the score sheet this week.
The last word has to go to Jayden Kelly. Firstly he, and his defense, got their clean sheet! After a quiet first half Jay had to pull off a couple of decent saves in the second half. One of them was was really traveling yet Jayden just dealt with it like it was nothing – imagine a bear swatting a wasp… There was slightly more finesse about his low near post save a few minutes after that. Best of all was his vocals today, loud clear and precise…indeed a few we’re probably audible where ever John Soulsby might happen to be today!!!
So that’s three outta three this season for the whites and three outta three for Barry Watkin – Chester’s good luck charm / pen stealer…
After the games the lads decided to knock out the infamous ‘fisherman’ celebration in honour the absent John Soulsby – rumours circulating he had in fact gone fishing today….evidence below…
Oh and if thats not enough ‘fishy fun’ here is a picture of the lads knocking out a post match dab! (obviously for the missing John Soulsby 😉 )
PS: Goalkeepers are way too cool to dab…
