U10 whites get a well deserved win

U10 Whites approached this game with optimism despite struggling with consistency this season. Second from top, we expected the opposition to come at us but we set about them straight from the first whistle. The best chance’s fell our way and one of several runs from Olly Loan ended in a goal squeezed in from an unlikely angle but today was all about hard work, taking responsibility and team work across the back. Leo Finkle played the entire match as sweeper. Smallest player on the pitch but for the second week running stood head and shoulders above all. Ashton Hui played just in front of him and is growing in confidence. Receiving the ball from the back and covering gaps he showed the potential to play at this level consistently. Ashton made way for James Carr, battling his way back to fitness and he threw himself into tackles to protect our goal, contributing with a couple of smart turns, putting us back on the attack. Behind this wall stood a rock, Joel Mewes-Reed. Despite feeling sick and having to make his way off home at half time he never looked like conceding and in such a tight game he can feel like he played his part. Of course, you have to defend from the front too and Olly, James O and Nick Twinn ran midfield and bossed the game for large parts of the first half. Those that filled central midfield worked tireless and some noticable last ditch blocks from our first half striker, Benjamin Wright, who later dropped back to midfield, probably made that extra difference helping us cross the line with a win. Who says strikers can only win games by scoring? As good as we were in the first half, they really had a go at us at the restart. Benjamin and Ashton stayed on the pitch till they started to tire and James C’s goal had to fend off the shots that got through. We rotated players a little, James O returned to action after limping off with a jarred knee and Nick put himself about despite starting the match with muscle strain, trying to find that killer pass. Still a clean sheet and creeping back into this half a sweet strike from Nick with Olly almost getting the rebound broken the oppositions good spell. The next 5 minutes saw James O, Olly and Nick have chances and you could feel a 2nd goal coming. Leo continued his MotM orchestration at the back but then seconds left on the clock saw Nick brush delicately across the shadow of an opposition player who had clearly been watching Tom Daley videos. Seconds ticked down. Ball was set. Bang! Still dont think the ball has landed yet. One more game to go and everything still to play for. We had nine heroes out there today.
