After a long summer break with few training sessions Chester Town U7’s lined up for the Russel Foster Tournament today expecting to be a little match rusty.
By the end of the first match even the referee had lost count so we settled on an conservative 8-1 win as we set about trying to play football in the right way, keeping possession and passing around the pitch. Everyone was contributing to the goals but the best came from a Martynas run wide and high cross finished by Andrew on the half volley and a superb deep pass through the middle of the pitch by Zack into the path of Ryan who banged it into the bottom corner. We entered the next game in high spirits with a rotated team and were unlucky to go a goal down early. This happened as we completely lost our shape and started to panic and group around the pitch. We conceded a couple more as Ethan and Harvey tried to battle in the middle areas but the lack of matches over the summer probably caught us out.
Disappointed and emotional at the rare loss we could have easily given up but the team started very strong in what turned out to be our last match due to other results. Using the whole pitch, playing good football and putting constant pressure on the opposition gave us a 2-0 half time lead. Luca was running with the ball, Martynas was back in defence giving the team a solid platform and Zack ran riot scoring goals. Ryan kept a clean sheet in goal and Harvey, Luca and Andrew bossed the middle with Ethan going on the run of the day from his own goal mouth to beat the keeper at the other end only to see his shot go just wide of the post. Final score 4-0. Great day, super football, lots of happy kids, just unlucky not to scrape through to the next round
