UNDER 9 WHITES GET THEIR FIRST POINTS ON THE BOARD

The sun finally broke through once the rain had stopped and kick off was barely delayed at Newbottle today. Assistant coach was given wrong team sheet so it was fun and games with positions for the day. Totally oblivious of the error the boys set about ‘total football’ style demonstrating that they are enthusiastic just to be playing football regardless of positions. We played against a strong wind the first half getting only a few shots on target but managing to go in at half time with a lead when Finley broke the deadlock with two quick goals just before half time. That lead was only possible due once again to hard work, especially in defence but also a strong first half in goal by  MotM James Carr. Coach took the unusual decision to stick with the same keeper in the second half and it might be the best decision he makes all season as James was magnificent in the second half, making perhaps a dozen big saves in the next 25 minutes. While we played the better football, the opposition managed to expose our back line too often and besides our goalkeepers heroics, tracking back by Oliver Loan, Will Jackson and Finley Benek kept pressure on their strikers to shoot quickly. It must have been a day for the birthday boys to shine though because tackle of the match came from Joel Mews stretching himself physically to get his toe onto a shot that looked to be heading into the bottom corner of our goal. Ben Wright, Nick Twinn, Thomas Walton and James Oliver are working really hard across the midfield and should remember we have moved up in difficulty again and now have to keep battling like this every week but the chances will start to come along and great to see Ashton Hui growing into this team and getting on the ball much more. A win, deserved, but we have played much better and lost before so great character shown on the day.
